I didn’t know that people come into our lives, and sometimes, if we’re terribly lucky, we get the chance to love them, that sometimes they stay, that sometimes you can, truly, depend on them.
Cathie Beck was in her late thirties and finally able to exhale after a lifetime of just trying to get by. A teenage mother harboring vivid memories of her own hardscrabble childhood, Cathie had spent years doing whatever it took to give her children the stability—or at least the illusion of it—that she’d never had. More than that, through sheer will and determination, she had educated them and herself too. With her kids in college, Cathie was at last ready to have some fun. The only problem was that she had no idea how to do it and no friends to do it with. So she put an ad in the paper for a made-up women's group WOW . . . Women on the Way. Eight women showed up that first night, and out of that group a friendship formed, one of those meteoric, passionate, stand-by-you friendships that come around once in a lifetime and change you forever . . . if you’re lucky.
Cheap Cabernet A Friendship eBook Cathie Beck
I purchased this book on an impulse. I was listening to a radio show where the author briefly mentioned this book. I thought it sounded like a fun book to read and so I bought it right then via Amazon.I was so moved by this book, that I immediately found the author's website and emailed her asking when it was going to be made into a movie! This is something I've never felt inspired to do...until after reading this book!
I laughed so hard I was crying in one part where she wrote about what her mother used to do to freak out people who had too much to drink (I don't want to give it away here). There was a scene where the author writes about a life defining day where she and her children were so hot and thirsty and the young girl who had access to the water refused to give them any (once again, I don't want to give away the whole scene). The author's writing here was so powerful....so intense.....it pierced my soul...and lingered with me for days.
Dr. Wayne Dyer has said that Friends are God's way of apologizing for your family. The friendship this book is about was definitely a Divine one as they were a gift to each other. And I do believe their friendship was a gift to me, too!
After reading this book, I was filled with so many different emotions.... compassion... love... sadness....joy.....and the awareness that we are all the walking wounded and no friendship should ever be taken for granted, especially our "connected" ones.
I do hope that when the movie comes out, they capture the jewels and the depth of this book as well as its humor. There are so many hidden, deep messages in here- I will have to read it again and again to capture them all.
Thank you so much, Cathie, for writing this book! I will be reading all of your future books!

Cheap Cabernet A Friendship eBook Cathie Beck Reviews
This memoir captured my attention and my heart. Two women on completely different paths of recovery from their pasts merge in Boulder Colorado. What follows is an urban Thelma a Louise. Emotional and physical hardships interlace with the normal interactions of life creating the challenges that give their friendship life and make it thrive. The remarkable path of life isn't always the most direct, well lit or joyous and sometimes it just needs a little cheap Cabernet.
Cathie Beck's Cheap Cabernet is a rollicking ride through the last three decades with a young single mother who suddenly finds herself free to find herself at the ripe age of 38. Connecting with the eccentric outrages of her friend Denise, the two become adventuresses in the hip city of Boulder, Colorado. Cathie discovers her writing talent as well as her denial of her friend's serious illness.
Beck's writing snaps and crackles, constantly moving us forward and backward through vivid scenes punctuated with jazzy dialogue and poignant description. The protagonist develops her sass along with her empathic intuition as she sees the inner strength of her best gal pal hover at the edges of her own envelope-pushing.
It's a heart-raking, heart-breaking tale, rich and dense with as much womanly wisdom as womanly folly. A coming of age American story or art as life and life as art, I recommend it without reservation. Cheap Cabernet is the kind of book you don't want to end and may stay up all night to finish.
Where to begin....So much has transpired since the selection of this book for our book club read. We selected it in November, read it and met on it December 29. Not only did we meet to discuss the book amongst one another, we had a very special guest join our meeting this night via Skype! Yes Cathie Beck, the Author of Cheap Cabernet A Friendship gave us ONE FULL HOUR of her time to answer ANY question our club had. And trust me you, we held nothing back...We met a new friend, we met a wonderful woman with a sensational sense of humor.
Ohhhh... to see life through the eyes of Cathie Beck....Those eyes appear to me to be always seeing the good, the positive the happy ending even when things are not looking so positive. But we never knew this in the way Cathie tells her story. Never once did we hear "Oh poor me" NEVER...
In reading this book we learned Cathie Beck is a human being. Shall I say it's a MUST read? ABSOLUTELY, I will say that reading this book has added something very special to mine and my friends lives in a way that we cannot even begin to explain. Would you like a book to make you say that same thing? Then maybe you should read it.. I am on my second time reading it...)
A wonderful real life memior of two women who were lucky to have found one another at that stage of their lives. You feel while reading that maybe one friend may have helped the other more, but by the end of the book you see how they each helped each other in their own very BIG way.
I just finished reading Cathy Beck's Cheap Cabernet A Friendship and I have to say I would recommend this book. The book was full of emotion and I felt every bit of it. It really opened my eyes to the different direction all our lives take and the influences along the way. I enjoyed seeing how Cathie responded to different situations which caused me to reflect on how I might have responded if that were to happen to me. Sometimes I think it would have been the same and others I believe I would have done differently--I think! However, I respect her decisions to do things she did and can even understand why. So, all in all the book was informative, entertaining and emotional. I can't imagine what else you might want from a book about women and their relationships.
